Dolby atmos

I was lucky enough to get to visit the new Atmos mix room at Deluxe Toronto.  This was the deadest big room I’ve ever been in.  It was impressive to hear the system.  Being a part of the AES gave me an incredible experience of A/B-ing the new IMAX mix room at Technicolor and the Atmos room at Deluxe.   In my opinion the ideas of IMAX immersive technologies translate much better.   The guys at IMAX got it right.

Screen Shot 2015-01-25 at 12.36.21 PMMartin Pilchner did an amazing job.
They had a guy from dolby explaining a little about how Atmos renders… very interesting how it translates from room to room.

IMAX- The Next generation of IMAX sound – 12 Channel configuration – and LASER projectors, about time

Imax – The Next generation of IMAX sound –  12 Channel configuration – and LASER projectors, about time!!

Had a fantastic experience with the new IMAX sound system at the AES meeting held at Technicolor.

The “Upper Quad” ceiling speakers really bring it together.IMG_8687

VBAP is going to need some work… and a HUI

I walked away asking: “If it were truly immersive, there would never be idle speakers”  Cory said: “Backgrounds are the first thing to go…” I think those will become crucial.

I also walked away wanting a dozen U87s…

Of course you could hear the birds chirping and running away WHILE the rocket was launching…

Moving stuff across the country

I most certainly had a busy “reading week”.  It started with finishing up a job My brother Mike started.  Moving 7 pallets of equipment from my moms garage in Saskatoon.    Followed by great visits with Family and friends.  I’m sorry I did not get the chance to meet with everyone I had planned to visit with.  Things got a little busy in the IT support world and there was so much family to visit!

Custom made dollies were built for the two large sections of console frames.

Modules were packed, boxed and palleted.  A small fortune in bubble wrap and pallet wrap were employed.

I’m excited to work on these projects again in my “Spare time”

Stay tuned for updates of what’s happening with this lot.  We’re very excited for what’s planned :-)

McDSP ultimate Compressor and Eq

Today I had the good fortune of meeting with Derek Heimlich of McDSP. Derek introduced me to a solution to a grief I’ve always had with software plugins. After his introduction and chat about this product, I blurted out that “Software has sucked, until now”

McDSP has released the 3060 Ultimate Compressor and 6020 Ultimate Equalizer bundles.

Until now no software allowed users to switch the character of an equalizer and compressor without loosing their settings. Modeled after some of the industries most revered equipment, McDSP comes through with another must have studio essential tool. This functionality gives you a true A/B between different compressors and equalizers. A unique experience. “I know what I want to achieve when I compress and eq, all I ever want to do is change the character”. As far as I know this is the only piece of software that keeps the EQ and compression setting between plugins. A+ work in my opinion.

I would suggest you give them a shot today for your next project. McDSP offers a free demo that is a worthwhile experience and great investment, check it out.

Herman Miller Chair repair

My Old Herman Miller wheels were really ruining my floor.  This is something you don’t really think about until it’s too late…
I ordered hardwood floor safe wheels for my chair.  I really recommend them for any surface… the soft rubber really keeps your floor looking new.

While I had the chair upside down I thought I’d share a mod I do to them.  If you’ve spent a lot of time in these chairs you’ll know the KLANG the legs make… to keep that klang down to a minimum I Supper 77  in some scrap acoustic foam to the legs.  2014-07-31 22.18.32

Wednesday night TV

Check out Jörg Wuttke, Understanding Microphones

Jörg Wuttke was born in Berlin in 1942. He studied electronics and telecommunications at Karlsruhe University, specializing in acoustics, and was teaching assistant to professor Günther Kurtze, the inventor of the shotgun microphone. He joined Schoeps GmbH as a research engineer in 1970, became its chief engineer in 1972, and is now its technical director.
Mr. Wuttke has been an active member of the Audio Engineering Society for many years, including publishing in the AES Journal and presenting papers and chairing workshops at conventions. In1993 he was awarded an AES Fellowship. Since 1972, he has been a member of the DIN standards committee on microphones and headphones. He maintains an avid interest in listening to music and recording live concerts.

20060723 – HVR ceiling fixture

In 2006 we (Myself and Andrew Waters) built a ceiling diffuser for the studio.  I’ve been doing some data backups and thought I’d share some pictures and info on the build.  The whole thing was made out of 2 X 4s and 3/4″ MDF.  I had a carpenter friend cut all the pieces
Screen Shot 2013-12-15 at 2.07.24 PMThis was the proposed layout.  Using a “herringbone diffuser” design, a frame would hang from the ceiling with some turnbuckles.  Continue reading

Book recommendation: Audio Systems Design and Installation

ASDIcover br-500x500
http://posttoronto.com/index.php?route=product/category&path=59

This is a very well respected read as recommended to me by Neil Muncy.  At the time I was working for him (in exchange for books and resources) he would not let this one go.  Because this book was originally a short run it was available in limited quantities and the used market priced this book at 100$ – 300$

The recently had an AES special where it was $20 off, but I think it’s a little past the promotion.  If you were to mail the publisher, they may honor it.

Mine is coming hot off the presses:

Anthony,

I have received your order for Audio Systems Design and Installation,
and will notify you as soon as the printer delivers the first copies.

I had been hoping that would be by Sept. 30, but the printer is still
adjusting proofs so it will likely take a bit longer.

Thanks!

Alan

Mixing Surround Sound in headphones…

there is a demo below… check it out in cans

SSC_Screenshot_spiegel

The Spatial Sound Card App is a software based, virtual sound card. It provides speakers for stereo and surround monitoring for the computer with standard headphones.

Professional monitoring of audio content usually requires complex, high-quality speaker installations, for which both budget and space are needed. The Spatial Sound Card enables monitoring of stereo and surround up to 7.1 with a standard headphone on the computer.

The Spatial Sound Card is a virtual sound card that is inserted between software, operating system and audio hardware. The room virtualizations originate from a constantly growing number of high end studios and dub stages like the ARRI Stage One, MSM Munich and others. The technology used in the SSC was used on major Blu-Ray releases (e.g. The Expendables I and II).

To optimize the virtualization the SSC provides parameters to customize the frequency curve of the used headphones. Presets for a lot of well-known headphone models are included, more will follow soon.

The Spatial Sound Card works with all applications that support multichannel audio output. These include media players like VLC and FLAC-Player as well as video and audio workstations. The SSC is recommended for media professionals from the audio, video or games area as well as for agencies and companies with workstations that need high quality audio monitoring.

For now the Spatial Sound Card runs on MacOS 10.6.x and above, a version for Windows will come within the third quarter of this year.
