Sound guy xmas idea #23 – New “Hand Cart”

Sound guy xmas idea #23 – New “Hand Cart” – AKA: Dolly, Two Wheeler, Mexican Segway, Miss Parton…

I was working with a cheep Canadian Tire dolly and blew a wheel almost right off the hop. It finally gave out and I needed to move something heavy.  I couldn’t just leave the tire flat so I cut it open and stuffed with old jeans and gaff taped it up.  It got me through the move but this piece of shit has to go!   a new wheel is 2/3 the price of the dolly… such junk is not worth repairing. 2013-11-27 09.45.10 2013-11-27 09.50.18

So after some looking I came across the GRUV GEAR V-Cart SOLO   img4

It’s transformable and flexible.

Sound guy xmas idea #20 – New Leatherman

I try to keep one on myself at all times… it’s an Every Day Carry.   I think I can build an entire studio with one of these tools, and there hasn’t been a day in a good long time I’ve not put this tool to work.  I’m partial to the Leatherman Wave and I know there is MUCH debate about these types of tools so to each their own.   They just released a black one with interchangeable bits.  Though I love my “classic one” I can see the bit set coming in very handy!Screen Shot 2013-11-17 at 11.10.39 PMScreen Shot 2013-11-17 at 11.13.26 PM Screen Shot 2013-11-17 at 11.13.38 PMScreen Shot 2013-11-17 at 11.27.51 PM

I’m not a foley artist but…

I’m not a foley artist but I was always told Corn Starch makes the best sounding snow…  Stay out of school kids; they can’t teach creativity, they can only encourage it.

Of you could just youtube anything and some drunk will give you the answers

Sound guy xmas idea #14 – A custom piece of studio furniture

If it’s not custom it’s crap.  And, if it’s not designed and built with the love and respect for the craft like Brock at 2egress builds, it’s also crap.

I met Brock my first week in Toronto and was blown away by his designs and builds.   The most elegant, tasteful, and quality Recording Studio Furniture on the market.

If you want to deliver something special to your special sound guy you will have to order it soon, like today if you want delivery by xmas.

Check out his website: and give him a call, he will inspire something you’ve never thought of.

Sound guy xmas idea #12 – PulTac Passive Tube Equalizer

Top shelf tube gear has never sounded so good and been so reliable.  Tristan has redesigned a classic and made it a price that’s hard to pass up.

Two channels of Passive and Inductor based Program Equalization!
Heavily modified version of the Pultec EQP-1, adding much more flexibility in the Low-End Boost/Cut, and in the High-Cut sections, with excellent Sowter inductors used in the High-Boost.

Single tube design, using one NOS Tesla/Sabre 6DJ8 per channel.
Hammond Transformers isolating both Inputs and Outputs.

You can buy one here: for MUCH cheaper than most mono tube filters!

Sound guy xmas idea #11 – Book: Audio Systems Design and Installation

This is indeed a classic reference anyone who is building a studio should have.  A mentor, Neil Muncy, spoke of this as the be all end all of doing studios right.  it is available directly from the publisher so all the proceeds go to the people who believe in spreading the message.  I got my copy the other day and I’ve thumbed through every page and know I will be referencing it soon! Check out the Table of contents!

Go to to buy it (they will ship it to your someone special) .  ASDIcover br-500x500
And while you’re at it: The Bottomless Money Pit by Roger Ginsley is  fantastic.

Sound guy xmas idea #10 – Dan Dugan E-1A

The DD E-1A is the ultimate tool in not caring.  It does all the mixing for you and truthfully can do a better job than most seasoned mixers.   It’s fast… I mean SUPER fast and accurate.  There is a certain Dugan sound and it’s catching on.  Automatic mixing/ducking/ muting etc is becoming the norm in Television, churches, public forums, boardrooms etc etc   I’ve actually seen “Dan Dugan” receive mixing credits on a tv show.  This tool is not going away and the idea is catching on through VST and DSP processing.

I think they’re about $3400 – but think about how much money you’ll save paying attention. 2013-11-05 07.35.12
