I was over at Ward-Beck the other week and saw some really nice turrets coming off the line. Hand Made, versatile and robust.

Youtube sound quality…
I was watching an Interesting lecture from google and Andrew Scheps had an interesting point about youtube audio: Youtube doesn’t have an option to select audio rate. The sound rate is based directly on the video playback rate. The lesson: If you are uploading songs to youtube with a place holder video, be sure it’s at 1080p. The audio will be fixed at 128kbps when the video is encoded under 720P and default to 384kbps at 1080P. Other great info: if you’re topping out the encoder, lower it 0.7dB

A project I’ve been working on has come… full circle ;-)
Congrats to Kevin Park and the Lacquer channel team for getting the Neumann VMS70 back in the game. A fantastic project to have been a part of! We recapped the entire audio electronics for Kevin before he had lathe aficionado Chris Muth calibrate it. It’s a fine precision piece of audio electronics and Kevin is one HELL of a lathe mechanic and cutting engineer! It, and he, are in good hands over at Toronto’s Lacquer Channel. I’m excited to cut a few plates myself!

Leaving Revolution Recording
Hey Folks:
I just wanted to thank everyone for supporting this page and enjoying the shenanigans I and the boys have been up to for the last few years. I will be leaving the Revolution Recording Custom Shop and my position as technical supervisor at Toronto’s Revolution Recording to go attend school full time this new year. What I’ve learned, done and been exposed to at Revolution Recording has been life changing; I can’t thank the owners, staff and clients enough for the opportunities they have given to me.

you know… I love this man and am forever in his debt. He’s made laboratory grade audio equipment available to music / broadcast industry for many years and his standards and interests have grown since his beginning. Truly a childlike interest in pushing the boundaries of the craft he practices. He applies raw physics to sound and you should watch this as a whole to appreciate the brilliance of his passion and dedication.
I’m glad someone as enthusiastic as Hutch Hutchison is at his side absorbing it all. (though he left RND)

Crunch time! only days left to buy your sound guy a gift! I like MG super contact cleaner with Poly Phenol Ether… it’s awesome. And when you have MG chemicals, cut two holes at the top to the cap to keep the straw around!
20060723 – HVR ceiling fixture
In 2006 we (Myself and Andrew Waters) built a ceiling diffuser for the studio. I’ve been doing some data backups and thought I’d share some pictures and info on the build. The whole thing was made out of 2 X 4s and 3/4″ MDF. I had a carpenter friend cut all the pieces
This was the proposed layout. Using a “herringbone diffuser” design, a frame would hang from the ceiling with some turnbuckles. Continue reading

A very new form of expressive keyboard has been introduced by ROLI in London. They craft a very intuitive keyboard like no other called the seaboard. Recently they released the seaboard studio.
I look at it as finally giving true pitch control to keyboardists.

Sound guy xmas idea #25 – New drill with USB charger
I love DeWalt tools. My drill has built many studios and is still going extremely strong! It is however very bulky for the work I do now. DeWalt (those clever guys) sent an email about their new 20V XR that looked great. One of the newest accessories is the USB charger attachment. I think it would come in handy all the time on a job site. It’s unfortunate that the DeWalt tools are “Steal me yellow”, it’s gold to a thief… I’ve lost a few pieces
