I’ve had nothing but a fantastic experience with WIHA drivers.

This 33 Piece Drivelock screw driver set is a versatile and lightweight solution to carrying around 33 full size drivers.

Sound Guy XMAS!!!!! Rigol DS1054Z 4 Channel Oscilloscope –

Xmas is coming!  As we know sound guys are the most difficult people to buy for.  Over the last few year I’ve posted some suggestions, here is day 1!

Day 1 – Rigol DS1054Z 4 Channel Oscilloscope

Screen Shot 2015-11-06 at 8.09.34 PM

This came to my attention from the EEVBLOG https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ETCOhzU1O5A love this guy.

It’s an awesome price for a very powerful little machine.  Include probes and USB cable.

For $507 Canadian Electro Meter in pickering can hook you up!

Fixing Logitech trackball performance

I love these Logitech Marble Mouse trackballs, I have one for every computer.  After a few years they slow down physically.  Cleaning the dust off does not help enough, something different needed to be applied.  I’ve been researching lubricants and oils, doing some tests with households; but I think I’ve found the perfect fluid.  Ian Gomes of Union Sound Company made a recommendation a few years back for Penny and Giles faders.  A quick amazon search lead me to Lucas Silicone Shock fluid.  I must report that it is the perfect product for this application.  If you need a drop, I’ll send you a q-tip of it in the mail.

Generating Code with spreadsheet for Keyboard Assignments of CADSOFT Eagle

I needed a way of Generating Code, lots of code.   In cadsoft eagle, the Keyboard Assignments are completely user customizable.  They have a script language that allows you to modify the software.  I’ve used hundreds of the ULP and SCRs and decided to write my own Generator.

Guitar Pedal – Balanced in to Low-Z unbalanced ==> HiZ to Balanced out

A client asked for a way to balance a guitar pedal so he could send and return Line Level to his guitar pedals.   He wanted a way to use his pedal collection as effect sends.  We came up with a modified Ward-Beck Systems POD-1.  The POD-1 offered op-amp gain adjustment trimmer pots so you are adjusting the gain of the balancing amplifiers.

The un-balanced output impedance is roughly 30Ω and the unbalanced Input Impedance is 47kΩ.  It’s a pretty safe assumption that mopst guitar effects can operate within these ranges.

You could also use this as a re-amp tool and a hyper-transparant Direct Inject box for keyboards and anything unbalanced.

XLR input Balanced +4dBu differential Receiver to an RCA connector to a 1/4″ TS jack that feeds the pedal then return to the opposite.

Dolby atmos

I was lucky enough to get to visit the new Atmos mix room at Deluxe Toronto.  This was the deadest big room I’ve ever been in.  It was impressive to hear the system.  Being a part of the AES gave me an incredible experience of A/B-ing the new IMAX mix room at Technicolor and the Atmos room at Deluxe.   In my opinion the ideas of IMAX immersive technologies translate much better.   The guys at IMAX got it right.

Screen Shot 2015-01-25 at 12.36.21 PMMartin Pilchner did an amazing job.
They had a guy from dolby explaining a little about how Atmos renders… very interesting how it translates from room to room.

SOUND GUY XMAS! The family delivers sound guy gifts!!

I’m so lucky to have such thoughtful family.
I know how difficult it is to shop for us sound guys.
I hope the ideas I’ve been sharing have been of inspiration to eager shoppers.

I thought I would share some of the ideas my family and friends came up with that I missed and appreciate as professional tools and inspiration to learn from!

Super bright LED flashlight.  This one is very small, takes 4 AAA batteries and I bet will last a very long time!

Make it stick – the science of successful Learning,  a very very good read.  I got 1/2 way through and gave it to a teacher that needed it more than I did.

Imax – The Next generation of IMAX sound –  12 Channel configuration – and LASER projectors, about time!!

Had a fantastic experience with the new IMAX sound system at the AES meeting held at Technicolor.

The “Upper Quad” ceiling speakers really bring it together.IMG_8687

VBAP is going to need some work… and a HUI

I walked away asking: “If it were truly immersive, there would never be idle speakers”  Cory said: “Backgrounds are the first thing to go…” I think those will become crucial.

I also walked away wanting a dozen U87s…

Of course you could hear the birds chirping and running away WHILE the rocket was launching…
