Going to re-manufacture some WBS daughter boards

As a part of my school program, I’ve decided to take a shot at re-designing 2 WBS components.

First the 4-110 mic pre-amp for the M460 – M461. In the 90s WBS redesigned the card using 5534 but I’m looking at something even more modern.

Second the 109 cards. While at Revolution Recording, Joe D redesigned his version of the 109 card and it was a HUGE improvement. He described it as “taking the cheese cloth off the audio” and he was right.

The idea is to have a plug and play module available for users with a few new features not incorporated in past designs.

Once they’re done I hope to have them for sale on www.AudioAholics.com

A Social Experiment

I’ve been thinking about a social experiment.
I often take calls from people looking for services, I’ve met a lot of great people in this industry and I do stand by their great work and contributions.   So instead of fielding calls and answering the questions I’ve created a Wizard Services section at http://audioaholics.com/wizard_services

I am asking you my friends to use it to work, get work share work and do work together.  I would like to consider it my rolodex

I’ve got the permission to post a few contacts and will be doing so this week.

RUPERT NEVE!!!!

you know… I love this man and am forever in his debt.  He’s made laboratory grade audio equipment available to music / broadcast industry for many years and his standards and  interests have grown since his beginning.  Truly a childlike interest in pushing the boundaries of the craft he practices. He applies raw physics to sound and you should watch this as a whole to appreciate the brilliance of his passion and dedication.

I’m glad someone as enthusiastic as Hutch Hutchison is at his side absorbing it all. (though he left RND)

Long live limitless analog technology!
Long live the passionate, curious and boundary pushing!
Long live Rupert Neve

Sound guy xmas idea #14 – A custom piece of studio furniture

If it’s not custom it’s crap.  And, if it’s not designed and built with the love and respect for the craft like Brock at 2egress builds, it’s also crap.

I met Brock my first week in Toronto and was blown away by his designs and builds.   The most elegant, tasteful, and quality Recording Studio Furniture on the market.

If you want to deliver something special to your special sound guy you will have to order it soon, like today if you want delivery by xmas.

Check out his website: 2egress.com and give him a call, he will inspire something you’ve never thought of.

20100424 – Roxanne – a WBS R1200 resto mod

One of my first ground up restores. This was a console with 12 Mic pre-amps, direct outs, summing and a monitor. It had a “Red Light” on the meter bridge… so I added a switch that said “POTRL” that “Put on the Red Light” and so it became “Roxanne” It’s still in use today but could use some tweaks I’ve learned from experience. We’re working on a very similar project right now, so It’s very cool to look back and learn.

The biggest lesson: it’s hard to put a value on a labour of love and curiosity, but bill accordingly.

  • a blast from my past…

Cleaning up garage and I found a real blast from my past. This was the first mixer I ever bought, if I looked hard enough I think I could find the invoice…. This is a british – Star Sound Dynamix 216. I saved up for months delivering a 180 news paper route.

I was 12 when I bought it and probably 14 when I made the case. It’s worth nothing, but it’s impossible for me to let it go! When I got it there were missing knobs so I painted them. I did many shows and MANY recordings with it. A classic piece of crap, but without it I’d not be who I am now.
